Hospitals over 50 years old nationwide to undergo safety audits

PUTRAJAYA: Forty eight aging hospital buildings nationwide will go through extensive auditing in the near future to ensure that they comply with safety requirements.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said hospital blocks that are more than 50 years old will be audited in terms of safety and maintenance.

“Most of the old hospitals were built during British rule and might not meet current safety standards. These buildings are still strong, but we want to check the safety in other aspects.

“The new buildings are required to comply with the Uniform Building by-law, which was only introduced in 1984. And then there was the Fire Service Act 1988 which they need to adhere to.

“(But) the old hospitals were built way before that. For instance, Batu Gajah Hospital in Perak is 136 years old, Balik Pulau Hospital in Penang is 130 years old and Hospital Tuanku Fauziah in Perlis is 97 years old.

“Thus, we need collaboration between the Works Department and Fire and Rescue Department, as well as other relevant agencies to conduct inspection on these buildings so that the safety of the hospitals can be established,” he told reporters at a press conference here today.

Subramaniam said this in the wake of the fire incident in the intensive care unit of Hospital Sultanah Aminah (HSA) in Johor, which claimed six lives on Tuesday.

He added that the cabinet has also agreed that the Works Department, Fire and Rescue Department and other relevant agencies will provide the necessary technical expertise and advice in reviewing safety guidelines required to prevent similar accidents from recurring.

Subramaniam said in extreme cases, old hospital buildings might be torn down.

“If the hospital building is in a dilapidated state, then it has to be demolished.” he said.

On the cause of the fire at HSA, Subramaniam said the ministry expects to receive the report from the Fire and Rescue Department in one or two weeks.

“We have yet to determine the cause of the fire. Once we have the report, we will bring the matter to the cabinet,” he said.

AirAsia bans Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones on all flights

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia has banned Samsung Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones onboard all its flights from midnight tonight on safety concerns.

The move follows the decision by the recent US Department of Transport to ban the device and amid reports of replacement units catching fire, it said in a statement here today.

Guests are not permitted to carry the Galaxy Note 7, including recalled and replacement devices on their person, in cabin bags, in check-in baggage or as cargo.

Any guests found with the device will be denied boarding.

The prohibition applies to all flights operated by AirAsia Group, comprising AirAsia Malaysia, AirAsia Thailand, AirAsia Indonesia, AirAsia Philippines, AirAsia India, Malaysia AirAsia X, Thai AirAsia X and Indonesia AirAsia X. - BERNAMA

Playing Pokemon Go May Extend Your Life By 41 Days: Study

Los Angeles: Playing Pokemon Go regularly may add an extra 41 days to your life, a new study has claimed, despite concerns that the popular augmented reality game could be a health hazard.

The health benefits of Pokemon Go, which encourages gamers to hunt Pokemon characters in real life by exploring their locale, have been lauded since its launch earlier this year. 

Despite the injuries it has led to, such as people walking into dangerous areas, the new study suggests the game could measurably affect life expectancy.

Researchers at Stanford University in the US and Microsoft found that engaged Pokemon Go players walked an extra 1,473 steps a day, roughly 25 per cent more activity, while playing the augmented reality game.

For people aged 15 to 49 an extra 1,000 steps a day could amount to 41.4 additional days of life expectancy, according to the researchers.

After tracking the activity of almost 32,000 Pokemon Go users for three months using an accelerometer and a gyrometer, the researchers found that the game "significantly increased" levels of physical activity, 'The Telegraph' reported. In particular, it has health benefits for people who are not traditionally that active.

"These increases are not restricted to already active and healthy individuals, but also reach individuals with low prior activity levels, and overweight or obese individuals," researchers said.

They also found that Pokemon Go was more likely to improve the movement of less active people than other health apps.

Malaysian suffers stroke in London, family hit by £46,000 hospital bill


LONDON: Mohamad Sahar Mhd Noor, 57, was looking forward to a family Hari Raya reunion as well as to witness his daughter’s graduation in London.

However, within 20 minutes of exiting the airport arrival hall on July 4, the chief clerk at the Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara, Negeri Sembilan, suffered a massive stroke.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he has been warded until today. With almost a month at the Charing Cross Hospital in West London, three weeks of which were in the Intensive Care Unit, the bills had accumulated to £46,000 (RM250,000).
Sahar, unfortunately, did not have medical insurance.

Nonetheless, he underwent a right frontal external ventricular drain (EVD) to release pressure on his brain and to allow the release of blood.
His daughter, Amirah Sahar, said her father’s employer Mara had agreed to advance £30,000 (RM160,000) for the hospital bill.
Desperate, the family then launched a fundraising campaign via website GoFundMe. Within two days, the generosity of donors, both Malaysians and foreigners, saw the fund hit its £25,000 target.
The family’s plea for help on Facebook reached 5,700 shares at the time of writing.
Donors, touched by the family’s plight, contributed amounts large and small, ranging from as low as £5.
One generous Malaysian even donated £5,000 to the family.
The family would like to bring Sahar back to Malaysia for treatment, as it would be much cheaper in Malaysia. They are now awaiting approval from the hospital, as well as the go-ahead from Malaysia Airlines for the flight home.
It is understood that a doctor and a nurse would be required to accompany him on the flight home if and when he is released from the hospital.
In the meantime, the family is worried that the hospital bills, which come up to almost £2,000 a day, will continue to increase each day Sahar remains in hospital.
Strapped for cash despite the donations, the family is now appealing to the generosity of fellow Malaysians to help them bring Sahar home as soon as possible.

Three major types of lipid molecules exist.:
  1. Phospholipids: These lipids are made up of two fatty acids and a phosphate group. These are the type of lipids used in the cell membranes of every cell in every animal. These lipids have structural functions. They aren’t the type that are floating around bloodstreams and clogging arteries.
  2. Steroids: These lipids have four connecting carbon rings and a functional group that determines which steroid molecule it is. These lipid compounds generally create hormones. Cholesterol is a steroid molecule that is used to create hormones, such as testosterone and estrogen. So, for a healthy sex life and other important functions, you need cholesterol. Cholesterol is transported around the body by other lipids. If you have too much cholesterol floating in your bloodstream, that means there is an excess of fats carrying it through your bloodstream, and that can cause trouble. The fats and cholesterol molecules can get stuck in your blood vessels, leading to blockages that cause heart attacks or strokes.
  3. Triglycerides: Triglycerides are made up of three (tri-) fatty acid molecules and a glycerol molecule. These are the typical fat molecules. They are formed from an excess of glucose; after the liver stores all the glucose it can as glycogen, whatever is remaining is turned into triglycerides. The triglycerides float through your bloodstream on their way to be deposited into adipose tissueAdipose tissue is the soft, squishy, visible fat you can see on your body. Adipose tissue is made up of many, many molecules of fat. And, the more fat molecules that are added to the adipose tissue, the bigger the adipose tissue (and the place on your body that contains it) gets.
It's very complicated isn't it?. Basically fat made build up inside your body because of the more you eat but with lesser activity you do daily, then you will add more fat in your body. The quantity of the food we consume everyday are not equivalent to be converted into energy.

  1. NEVER STOP MOVING : There's one thing to like about visceral fat: It yields fairly easily to aerobic exercise. Running, biking, or swimming. Basically anything that gets your heart rate up wins over resistance training when it comes to getting rid of the stuff. A recent study from Duke University found that jogging the equivalent of 12 miles a week is enough to melt belly fat.
  2. DRINK A LOT OF WATER : Research shows that dieters who guzzle plenty of H2O lose more weight than those who don't.
  3. HALVE YOUR FOOD PORTION Divide your normal portion by two and save the rest for later. You're likely to feel full on less food than you think.
  4. DIET 2 DAYS A WEEK : If you can't stick to a program all the time, try slashing your calories to 650 a day just two days a week and eating normally the other days. One study suggests this offers protection from breast cancer as well as assistance with weight loss.
  5. BE A VIRGIN : Alcoholic beverages are some of the emptiest calories out there. Replace them with water, and the weight comes off.
  6. EAT RIGHT :Vegetarianism not helping you lose? Take it to the next level by swearing off eggs and dairy, too. Cheese can be a diet killer. Eliminate packaged foods and eat only fresh ingredients you've prepared. No bags, boxes, cans, or cartons allowed.
  7. Last and finally continuously and NEVER get carried away from your target.
